Putting points on layers, where the layername is made from the description of each point

A customer had a problem importing his points into his CAD system. There were a ton of points, and each point had (as well as XYZ coords) a description. The point description was ideal for a layername.

As an example consider 250 points where 50 are CURB points, 50 are ROAD_CENTER points and so on. It would be great if some software would create a DXF file of this list of points, and at the same time put the points on layers CURB, ROAD_CENTER and so on. Here is a very small data sample to show what I mean:

Description = Layer in a DXF file

Pointor is a program which takes lists of points, displays them graphically and then saves them as DXF files ready for your favorite CAD program (AutoCAD, Rhino, IntelliCAD etc.)

Here is a graphical representation of what it does:

Converting from point lists to CAD files

The image shows Access and Excel, but the software works equally well with Open Office and in fact any Windows (XP or Vista) program which can create lists of points and put them in the clipboard or save them to a file.

And below are shown the check boxes you need to setup if your data has descriptions and you want the descriptions to be considered layers:

Point Layer = Description in a DXF file

Here is another example where the layername is taken from the "description" column of a point list:

If you use the pointlist icon you'll be able to see what is in the 4th column and what is considered the "description":

If you have some point data you would like to view in Pointor, but are you unsure as to which format to try please contact me. Even if we do not support that format yet almost all the formats above have been suggested by customers.
